This week in reading, I have been doing the required reading testing, so not any pictures from that. I am amazed at the progress these students have made since the beginning of the year. Thank you for working with them at home and reading nightly. It is paying off. We have been reviewing the vowel sounds and working on sounding out CVC words. The sight word this week was "are". We also focused on writing stories with a beginning, middle and an ending.
In science, we talked about the difference between day and night. We learned what objects you can see in the day, in the night and in both. We also discussed why we have day and night.
In math, we began a unit on subtraction. We started off by reading and playing musical chairs to understand the concept of taking away.
Students practiced taking away goldfish from their pond in given story problems.
We enjoyed reading this book and acting it out with our goldfish.
We also used number tracks to help us add and subtract. We worked on the number that comes before and after a given number too.
We practiced solving story problems in many different ways and having volunteers come to the board to show their strategies.
We got to celebrate Ben's 6th birthday.
We are looking forward to our 100th day of school on Monday. We cannot wait to dress up like we are 100 years old. Thanks to everyone who sent in snacks and supplies to help with this special day. I have all sorts of fun activities planned for this day and cannot wait to share them with you.
Don't forget to be working on your Valentine's Day boxes and cards at home. I showed the students some pictures from my last class to give them ideas. Be super creative with these and have fun.
Also, please don't forget to give permission for your child to go on our next field trip using the Google forms link I sent. We will need the $6 admission price fee by February 22nd.
