Week 2

This week in reading, we learned 3 ways to read a book.

We learned about who the author and the illustrator are to a song. During our writing time, we worked on being an author and illustrator too. We also came back and added more detail to our story the following day. Then we shared our stories with the class.

We enjoyed reading this book for pleasure.

We listened to the story, Cookie's Week.

We sequenced the story and took retelling cards home so that we can retell the story to our families.

We retold a familiar story.

And we really enjoyed acting out the nursery rhyme.

Then we added this poem to our poetry notebooks.

We learned two sight words this week, "I" and "we". We did word work with these words and put them in our language arts notebooks.

Our theme this week was All About Me. We read this book.

We enjoyed making self portraits and writing about things we liked about ourselves.

This was another favorite book that we read about this week.

We read this book to discuss how we are all alike, yet also different. We work best when we work together as a team.

We had fun making pictures about the things we like. We also made a rainbow of how we are also different.

We read the book, A Bad Case of Stripes. We discussed the beginning, middle and end of a story. We stopped the book at 3 different points in the story and drew pictures of the main character based on the words that we heard.

One of the most enjoyable times we had this week was our show and tell. We loved sharing things about ourselves and learning about each other.

We learned about science this week and drew pictures in our science journals about what we think science is.

We learned what a scientist is too and wrote about what kind of scientist we want to be in our science journals.

We learned about science tools. We sorted tools and toys and got to explore some of the science tools we use in kindergarten.

We ended our week with a science experiment called "Milk Explosion" and we wrote about this in our science journals.

In math this week, we worked on combinations of 5. We played lots of games to help us learn these. We a pplied our learning to a journal question about combinations of boys and girls in the classroom.

We are doing a better job following the rules of the classroom, but still having a difficult time being quiet during instruction. Please have your child go over these expectations with you so that they can remember to be respectful during teaching time so that they can learn.

We had fun celebrating Rithika's birthday in class and on the playground with special treats.

One highlight of the week was getting to go to the library to check out books. Please return your child's library book in the bag each Friday so that they can check out a new book.

Friday, we had our first assembly. The next one will be September 16th. Parents are welcome to come to this assembly, which will happen first thing in the morning. Enjoy the long weekend and we'll see you back at school on Tuesday. Grandparents Day is this Friday and we would love to have grandparents come join us at lunch time if possible.
